Dad. Accident. Broken back.

June 26, 1981 – 9:00 p.m.

I was in my apartment. Pillows stacked behind my back, working on a crossword puzzle. I heard the sirens of an ambulance. I stopped what I was doing and looked towards the window facing the street that the sound was coming from. The very first thought I had was, ¨someone´s life is going to change tonight¨.

Not in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought the lives that were about to change were going to be the lives of my family.

I stopped and sadly said a little prayer, praying to God that who ever was in that ambulance was going to be O.K.  I silently went back to my crossword puzzle.  At 9:30 p.m. the phone beside my bed rang.  I picked it up.  It was my sister on the line.  ¨Carolyn, we´re at the hospital.  Dad´s been in an accident.¨

The ambulance I had heard 30 minutes earlier was carrying my Dad.  The lives that were about to change forever were the lives of my family.
